  • 01/09/12--04:00: Jerry Sloan ready to return to coaching (chan 1390827)
  • It's been less than a year since Jerry Sloan left his coaching job with the Utah Jazz, where he had been since 1988. Along with his three earlier seasons leading the Chicago Bulls, Sloan left the coaching ranks with a 1,221-803 record and with truckloads of respect throughout the league.

Now the 69-year-old who played for the Baltimore Bullets and Chicago Bulls from 1965-'76 (and made the All-Star team twice) is talking about returning to the bench.

"I think if the right situation came along, whatever that is," he said, according to Sports Illustrated. "I don't know what the right situation is. We'll have to wait and see, I guess."

Teams have already been calling him to see if he's wanted to return and sources told SI that the Indiana Pacers "were among those seriously hoping to land him before they gave Frank Vogel a permanent position."

It sounds like Sloan is happy to have taken a break but is now energized to make his return.

  • 01/09/12--04:41: Bucks’ Andrew Bogut returning Tuesday (chan 1390827)
  • The Milwaukee Bucks have gone 2-6 so far this season and four of those games have been played without 7-0 center Andrew Bogut, who has been back in Australia dealing with a "family issue," according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The word from Bogut's agent, David Bauman, though, is that the 27-year-old who lead the league in blocks last season with 168 will be back and ready to play in the team's scheduled matchup Tuesday against the San Antonio Spurs.

Bogut is averaging 14.2 points, 10 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.8 blocks in the four games he's played this season. Last year, he finished the season averaging 12.8 points, 11.1 rebounds, two assists, and 2.6 blocks per game.

  • 01/10/12--02:54: Wizards not firing Flip Saunders yet (chan 1390827)
  • The Washington Wizards enter Tuesday night's game against the 3-5 Toronto Raptors without a win in eight attempts this season and word keeps coming that coach Flip Saunders will be sent packing soon.

Sources to the Washington Post have it, though, that Saunders isn't going anywhere even though he has "led" the Wizards to a 49-123 record in his time with the team. He has another year on his four-year, $18 million contract after this one.

"There is a lot of noise right now — and lots of angst," team owner Ted Leonsis wrote on his blog Monday. "I have found the best thing to do in times of stress and turmoil is to do research; be analytical; NOT emotional; and try to find ways to improve. . . . Obviously — no one is happy with the progress we are making as a team; it is important that we be measured and smart in how we move forward."

When Saunders was hired, he had Caron Butler, Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison on his squad, the Post reminds fans. Since it was discovered that Arenas brought guns into the locker room, a whole lot has changed for the team and Saunders.

  • 01/10/12--03:28: Knicks dealing Amar’e Stoudemire for Dwight Howard? (chan 1390827)
  • The New York Knicks were expected to dominate this season with Amar'e Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler and Carmelo Anthony manning the front line, but the team has gone 5-4 in coach Mike D'Antoni's final year of his contract. They sit in second place behind the Philadelphia 76ers, who don't have the same kind of star power as the Knicks but have found ways to win games so far this season.

Now the New York Daily News has it that Stoudemire has been mentioned as a trading chip that could be used to land Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, who told Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears last weekend that he doesn't think he's going to be dealt anytime soon, if at all.

The Daily News notes that Stoudemire's name also surfaced last month in reports involving Chris Paul and the New Orleans Hornets. It's hard to believe the Knicks would let go of Stoudemire, who is averaging 21 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists this season.

Stoudemire, for one, isn't too concerned: "I don't worry about that stuff," Stoudemire said on Monday, according to the paper.

  • 01/11/12--02:56: Warriors’ Stephen Curry back in a week? (chan 1390827)
  • Young Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry sprained his right ankle for the third time in 16 days (and his seventh in 15 months) recently. It's been discovered, though, that the sprain has caused no structural damage to the ankle and that Curry does not need surgery again as he did last offseason, according to ESPN.

A timetable for his return has not been set, but the team is hoping to have one in the next 2-3 days, the site notes. "It could be a week to 10 days or possibly less before Curry returns but that would depend on how the ankle responds to treatment," ESPN reports.

Warriors GM Larry Riley told reporters Tuesday that Curry would need to pass a "stringent functionality test," the site reports.

"Everybody has some level of concern because of the way it has been sprained in the past, but we're all convinced we're doing the right thing," Riley said, according to ESPN. "He's a good player, a really good player, that we need. And yet you also want to protect him as far as his future is concerned and our future is concerned."

Curry is averaging 15.2 points, 5.6 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game this season.

  • 01/11/12--03:59: Byron Scott hoping to keep Anderson Varejao at trade deadline (chan 1390827)
  • The season is still young and the 4-5 Cleveland Cavaliers are sitting in third place in the East's Central Division. The team isn't expected to make any kind of run for a title, of course, so a few of its players are already being discussed as probable trade targets for contenders, particularly point guard Ramon Sessions and big man Anderson Varejao.

The 6-10 Varejao, a native of Brazil, is off to one of his best starts in his eight seasons, averaging 9.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 0.6 blocks per game in the season's first nine games.

However, Cavs coach Byron Scott isn't ready to let Varejao head elsewhere. "It would have to be an unbelievable person to get back," Scott said, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I look at him as one of the guys you look at and say, 'He's not going anywhere.' I just feel he's that valuable and feel that strongly about him and what he means to this team."

The 29-year-old has three years and $27 million left on his contract.

  • 01/11/12--04:25: Gerald Wallace will seek Blazers extension this summer (chan 1390827)
  • Even though veteran forward Gerald Wallace is enjoying his time with the Portland Trail Blazers so much that he thinks it might be a good place to finish his career and he can opt out of his current deal this summer, he isn't looking to sign a contract extension with the team this season "because of limitations with the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement," according to the Oregonian.

Wallace's reps have told the team as much, the paper reports, but also shared that Wallace would be totally open to signing a new deal with the team this summer. According to the Oregonian, the team had approached Wallace in December about signing an extension.

Wallace's current contract ends after next season, but he can opt out and sign a longer deal than he can if he signed an extension while still under contract.

The 29-year-old Wallace, who joined the Blazers via trade from the Charlotte Bobcats last season, is averaging 15.6 points and 6.3 rebounds.

  • 01/11/12--04:43: Timberwolves’ Michael Beasley out till next week? (chan 1390827)
  • Minnesota Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley has missed the last three games due to a sprained right foot and it's not looking like the second overall pick of the 2008 draft will be back in action until at least next week.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Beasley was still wearing a boot on his right foot before the Wolves took on the Chicago Bulls Tuesday night, losing 111-100.

"The swelling has gone down a bit on the mid-foot sprain, but he still can't put any weight on the ball of his foot," the paper notes, "so he's probably not going to be ready anytime soon." It appears likely at the very least, the Star Tribune notes, that he'll miss the two-game road trip this weekend.

In the games he has played in, the 23-year-old ambidextrous Beasley is averaging 12.9 points, seven rebounds and an assist per game.

  • 01/12/12--03:01: Raptors’ Andrea Bargnani strains calf (chan 1390827)
  • Toronto Raptors forward Andrea Bargnani leads the team in scoring, averaging 22.3 points and 6.5 points a game. His stats took a hit Wednesday night, though, as he missed the fourth quarter in the team's loss to the Sacramento Kings with a strained left calf after scoring only 10 points.

The 4-7 Raptors need a healthy Bargnani. He will have a magnetic resonance imaging done Thursday, according to the Canadian Press, but said that the injury recalls one he had last year.

"He doesn't remember doing it," Raptors head coach Dwane Casey said, according to the Press. "It's similar to last year. It's a lot of fatigue. You see a lot of it around the league right now with fatigue, pulls and that type of thing."

The Raptors did see the return of Linas Kleiza, who has been out since last February, but the team is hoping Bargnani doesn't miss much time: "(Bargnani) is our best player," said Jose Calderon, according to the Press. "It's tough to see him go out and after they let us know that he wasn't coming out again, it was tough."

  • 01/13/12--02:16: Rasheed Wallace returning to NBA? (chan 1390827)
  • Rasheed Wallace spent 15 seasons in the NBA before retiring in 2010. But he apparently doesn't like the retired life. Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski is hearing that the 6-11 Wallace "has been working out and probing some close league friends about possible destinations to sign for the rest of the season."

The 37-year-old Wallace, who averaged 9.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game for the Boston Celtics during his final season, holds "appeal for several contending teams, but all wonder about his shape and conditioning after sitting out 18 months," according to Wojnarowski.

In his career, the Philadelphia native spent time with the Washington Bullets, Portland Trail Blazers, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, and Boston, going to the All-Star game four times. His lifetime average is 14.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game.

  • 01/13/12--02:33: Sprained ankle sidelines Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony (chan 1390827)
  • The Memphis Grizzlies ended the four-game winning streak of the New York Knicks with a 94-83 win Thursday night, but there may have been a bigger loss than that to the Knickerbockers.

Carmelo Anthony sprained his left wrist in the first quarter, missed most of the second half with a sprained right ankle, the Associated Press reports. X-rays on the ankle were negative, the wire service notes, but Anthony isn't promising that he'll be back Saturday when his team takes on the Oklahoma City Thunder. "I've been getting beat up for nine years, so, I'm not worried about getting beat up," said Anthony, the AP reports. "I'm going to get through it. I'm living. I'm walking. I'm smiling. I'm hurt, but I'll be all right."

The New York Daily News notes that Anthony, the Knicks' leading scorer, said he can wrap the wrist and play through that, but the ankle is a different matter.

Anthony is averaging 25.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

  • 01/13/12--02:54: Magic guard Jason Richardson headed to MRI (chan 1390827)
  • Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard broke Wilt Chamberlain's record for most free throws attempted in a game Thursday night, putting up 39 (and sinking 21) in the team's 117-109 win over the Golden State Warriors. Unfortunately, the Magic — tied for the Southeast Division lead with the Miami Heat — lost the services of starting shooting guard Jason Richardson, who didn't play most of the second half due to a sprained left knee, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

X-rays taken on the knee were negative after the game, according to Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears, but he will have an MRI on Friday.

The 30-year-old Richardson, the fifth overall pick in the 2001 draft out of Michigan State, is averaging 11.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game.

  • 01/13/12--04:26: Hawks looking for Al Horford’s replacement? (chan 1390827)
  • Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford, an All-Star for the past two seasons, tore his left pectoral muscle in the first quarter Wednesday against the Indiana Pacers and now will be out for at least three months.

Zaza Pachulia took Horford's place at the start of Atlanta's 111-81 win over the Charlotte Bobcats Thursday. The team has one other center, Jason Collins, on the bench. Pachulia has averaged 6.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 0.4 blocks per game over his career. The 25-year-old Horford's career averages per game are 12.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that GM Rick Sund isn't sure if the Hawks will try to sign a free-agent center or not. "We'll sit down the next three of four days and talk it over to see if there's anything we want to do," Sund said, according to the paper. "Do we want to go with the status quo, or how do we want to do it."

  • 01/16/12--03:06: MRI of Clippers’ Chris Paul’s knee negative (chan 1390827)
  • The Los Angeles Clippers took down the rival Los Angeles Lakers 102-94 Saturday night, but new Clippers point guard Chris Paul went down late in the fourth quarter.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Paul "had an MRI exam Sunday on his strained left hamstring that was negative" and is now being listed as day-to-day.

The 26-year-old four-time All-Star, who is averaging 18 points, 8.4 assists and three rebounds per game, is questionable for Monday's game against the New Jersey Nets.

[Video: Are the Lakers still the top team in L.A.?]

The Times predicts that Chauncey Billups will take over Paul's spot if he doesn't start and Randy Foye will fill the shooting-guard role.

"Obviously, Chris is a big part of what we do," Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro said, according to the Times. "But we had to deal with it and other guys have got to get ready to play."

  • 01/16/12--03:36: Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony returning Monday? (chan 1390827)
  • New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony sprained his right ankle Thursday night as his team went down to the Memphis Grizzlies Thursday. The injury caused Anthony to miss Saturday's loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

[Video: Is the condensed NBA schedule hurting the Mavericks?]

The team will look to halt its short losing skid when it takes on the Orlando Magic Monday afternoon and it may have Anthony back in the lineup to help. The New York Daily News reports that Anthony "wouldn't make a firm commitment" but is likely to "try to play Monday" for the team's annual Martin Luther King Day game.

"It's sore, but if I can go, I will go,'' Anthony said Sunday, according to the paper. "It's time to get going right now.'"

Anthony is averaging 25.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game for the 6-6 Knicks.

  • 01/17/12--03:07: Dwight Howard adds Clippers to list, sours on Nets (chan 1390827)
  • The Los Angeles Clippers are finally looking pretty good with Blake Griffin and Chris Paul leading the team to the Pacific Division lead. Now word comes that Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard wouldn't mind joining the party.

SheridanHoops.com reports that Howard has informed the Magic that they can add the Clippers to his list of teams of possible trade destinations. The other three include the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers and the New Jersey Nets.

"He's been watching them a lot. He's intrigued by the Clippers," said the source to SheridanHoops.

However, the source also said that it is looking like Howard will stick around with the Magic for the full season since the team is currently leading the Southeast Division with a 9-3 record.

"Howard has soured on the idea of joining the Nets this season and missing the playoffs, especially since he could still join the Nets next summer prior to their move to Brooklyn and join a lineup that would include a re-signed Deron Williams, Brook Lopez, MarShon Brooks, Anthony Morrow and the Nets' lottery pick, which will be a good pick in a well-stocked draft," the site notes. That assumes Williams will re-sign, of course.

Howard is averaging 19.4 points, 14.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game.

If Howard gets dealt from the Magic before the trade deadline, the site notes, Williams could end up being dealt from the Nets since without one committing, the other likely won't sign this summer.

  • 01/17/12--03:11: Bobcats put Boris Diaw on trading block (chan 1390827)
  • Boris Diaw arrived on the Charlotte Bobcats roster via trade with the Phoenix Suns in December 2008 (along with Raja Bell and Sean Singletary). Now he may disappear from the roster in the same way.

The Charlotte Observer reports that Diaw (and his expiring contract) is on the trading block, but the team isn't willing to "take back a bad contract to make a deal."

Since his arrival, the 29-year-old had started 235 straight games for the Bobcats before coming off the bench for Monday's 102-94 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Coach Paul Silas is becoming increasingly frustrated with Diaw, the paper reports. "As Charles Barkley said on national television recently, Diaw is a nice guy but a relatively passionless player," the Observer notes. "As Barkley put it, he [Barkley] always went out to kick someone's butt, and Diaw isn't of that nature."

The 6-8 native of France is averaging 8.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.6 assist per game.

  • 01/17/12--03:14: Sprained left foot sidelines Mavs’ Vince Carter? (chan 1390827)
  • The Los Angeles Lakers took down the Dallas Mavericks 73-70 on Monday and veteran Mavs shooting guard Vince Carter went down on the final play of the game with a foot injury while shooting what could have been a game-tying shot.

"I was going right after I caught it and heard it pop,'' Carter said, according tot the Dallas Morning News. "But it's not broken." However, Carter was on crutches after the game.

The diagnosis was that he had a sprained left foot after he had X-rays, the paper reports, and he likely will have further tests Tuesday.

The 34-year-old eight-time All-Star, the fifth overall pick in the 1998 draft by the Golden State Warriors and the Rookie of the Year in 1999, is averaging 9.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

  • 01/17/12--04:54: Pacers’ Roy Hibbert doesn’t want extension? (chan 1390827)
  • Since being drafted 17th overall in 2008, 7-2 center Roy Hibbert has averaged 10.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game for the Indiana Pacers. This season, though, his numbers are up to 13.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game over the first dozen contests of the season.

NBA.com reports that it looks like the 25-year-old is planning to possibly take his talents to another team as a restricted free agent this summer rather than trying to get the Pacers to sign him to a long-term extension.

After all, teams are always seemingly desperate for a talented big man.

"I'm not saying 100 percent we wouldn't do [an extension], but I'd say it's likely," his agent, David Falk said, according to the site. "He likes Indiana, it's a great place, it's worked out well. But it's my opinion that generally, these things are hard to do. If I was an owner I wouldn't do one unless I got a discount. … I think more than anything else, the reason guys do extensions, in my opinion, is when you have a client who is insecure that he's going to get paid. … Centers don't grow on trees. If the guy has the confidence to wait, he's probably better off waiting."

  • 01/18/12--03:43: Celtics trading Paul Pierce? (chan 1390827)
  • The Boston Celtics won a championship with Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce back in 2008. Now the super three are aging and the team has lost five in a row to put themselves in third place in the Atlantic Division and one and a half games out of eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

Garnett and Allen both become free agents this summer and "several contending teams have inquired about Pierce's availability," according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

Pierce, who was drafted tenth overall by the Celtics back in 1998, "has two years and $32 million left on his contract through the 2013-14 season, and moving him for a shorter deal could make the Celtics a huge player in free agency the next two years," Wojnarowski points out.

So it remains to be seen just what Celtics execs are thinking. The 34-year-old small forward Pierce is averaging 15.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game this season.

  • 01/18/12--03:54: Warriors’ Stephen Curry not ready to return (chan 1390827)
  • Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry sprained his ankle three times in less than three weeks at the start of the season and the team is still waiting for his return.

The word from CBSSports.com is that it remains unclear "how long that waiting will last." Curry hasn't been in the lineup since Jan. 4. Tuesday night's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers had been targeted for his return, the site notes, but Warriors coach Mark Jackson didn't think his ankle was ready yet for game action.

However, the site reports that Curry "was able to play some 5-on-5 for the first time in 13 days," but his "ankle felt fatigued near the end of practice."

Curry has now missed seven straight games, during which the Warriors have gone 3-4. "You try to make a move and you just don't have that force behind it," said Curry, according to CBSSports.com. "I'm tired of missing games. I said I was going to wait, but I didn't say how long I was going to wait."

The 23-year-old Curry, the seventh overall pick of the 2009 draft, is averaging 15.2 points, 5.6 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game in the six contests he's appeared in.

  • 01/18/12--04:41: Nets adding D-Leaguer Larry Owens? (chan 1390827)
  • The New Jersey Nets are hurting in their final season in the Garden State. The team is 3-11 and only has the Washington Wizards below them in the Eastern Conference standings. Not exactly the way bazillionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov wanted to gear up for taking the team to its next home in Brooklyn.

The team wanted to add Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic via trade this offseason but the word is that Howard isn't keen on doing that unless he knows that Deron Williams will stick around. Nets fans looking for an injection of new talent onto the roster will have to be satisfied with the news that the team is "in the process of calling up Tulsa 66ers forward Larry Owens from the D-League," according to ESPN.

Owens got his first taste of the NBA last season with the San Antonio Spurs, averaging 1.3 points, 0.6 rebounds, and 0.1 assists per game in seven contests there before joining the Washington Wizards were his averages per game got upped to 6.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. In Tulsa, Owens is posting a more respectable 13.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

The deal is supposed to be completed on Wednesday, the site notes, but the Nets need to ditch another player before adding Owens. If he is with the Nets past Feb. 10, ESPN reports, his contract will be guaranteed for the rest of the season.

  • 01/18/12--04:43: Grant Hill seriously considered joining Bulls (chan 1390827)
  • Since being selected with the third overall pick in the 1994 draft, forward Grant Hill has played for the Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, and Phoenix Suns. After four seasons in Arizona, Hill was a free agent last offseason and he seriously considered joining the Chicago Bulls, according to the Arizona Republic.

"Hill … had plenty of suitors, but none pressed his decision like the Bulls, who made a competitive offer to Hill, fully knowing that he was coming off knee surgery in September at age 39," according to the paper.

Could Hill be regretting the one-year deal he signed with the Suns for $6.5 million. The Bulls have the best record in the NBA while the Suns have lost five in a row and are 4-9 on the season.

"It was an interesting conversation," Hill said of Chicago's pursuit of him, the Republic reports. "It was very tempting. … It's a great sports town. They definitely were in the picture, and it took serious consideration on my part."

  • 01/18/12--05:50: Dwight Howard uninterested in joining Clippers? (chan 1390827)
  • It is looking less and less likely that the Orlando Magic are going to trade center Dwight Howard before the March 15 trade deadline if things keep going the way they are.

The All-Star game is in Orlando in Feb. 26 and it seems like it would be a pretty bad PR move for the team to send Howard packing before then. Plus, the Magic lead the Southeastern Conference with a 10-3 record, good for third best in the Eastern Conference. Why mess with success?

The word has been that Howard, who can become a free agent this summer, has requested a trade from the team and had a short list of teams that he'd be interested in joining. A report from SheridanHoops.com Tuesday had him adding the Los Angeles Clippers to that list, but Howard "dismissed" the idea, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The destinations on the list are still just the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, and New Jersey Nets, Magic General Manager Otis Smith said Tuesday, the Sentinel reports. Howard's agent has not been given permission to talk to any team other than those three, Smith added, according to the paper.

Howard is averaging 19.8 points, 14.9 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game.

  • 01/19/12--03:09: Celtics lose Rajon Rondo to hurting wrist (chan 1390827)
  • The Boston Celtics pulled out a 96-73 win over the Toronto Raptors Wednesday night, ending a five-game losing streak. But the team also lost the services of their starting point guard, Rajon Rondo, in the third quarter due to a sore right wrist after being flagrantly fouled by Linas Kleiza.

"I tried to brace my fall, and I put my arm behind my bottom and just landed on it, my wrist and elbow," Rondo said, according to the Boston Herald. "I knew what a dislocated elbow felt like [having suffered the injury in Game 3 of last spring's playoff series with the Miami Heat] and it wasn't that, so I was thankful for that. But my wrist was throbbing."

X-rays were negative, according to the Herald. Rondo wanted to return to the game but knew things were in hand so rested instead, the paper notes.

Rondo is averaging 14.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 10 assists per game.

  • Atlanta Hawks forward Tracy McGrady was trying to stop a pass from Portland Trail Blazers forward Nicolas Batum Wednesday night and ended up getting his finger into his opponent's eye.

Batum asked to be removed from the game soon after, according CBSSports.com, and "wound up in the hospital."

X-rays there "were negative for an orbital fracture and the team is listing him as day-to-day," CBSports reports. The team takes on the Toronto Raptors in Canada on Friday.

The 23-year-old Batum, a French native who was picked in the first round of the 2008 draft, is averaging 12.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.0 block per game this season.

  • 01/19/12--03:16: Back spasms sideline Magic’s Hedo Turkoglu (chan 1390827)
  • Orlando Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu didn't even make it on the court Wednesday night when his team took on the San Antonio Spurs due to back spasms, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The spasms had started after Turkoglu "twisted his back going for a rebound late in Tuesday's win over the Charlotte Bobcats," the paper notes.

"They had him in for treatments all day," coach Stan Van Gundy said, according to the Sentinel. "He's a little bit better but not enough to go."

Also missing was Jason Richardson, who now has missed three in a row due to a bone bruise on his left knee. "I really want to be out there, but they didn't want me to aggravate it and go back to Step One," Richardson said, the Sentinel reports.

Turkoglu is averaging 14.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game while Richardson is contributing 11.1 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2 assists per game.

However, Kidd wasn't invited to try out for this summer's Games in London. But that's not stopping the 38-year-old from wanting to be involved with the program.

"I talked with Coach K [Mike Krzyzewski] about maybe getting into the coaching end of it," Kidd said Wednesday, according to the Dallas Morning News. "I want to stay connected with them in some form."

  • 01/19/12--04:51: Celtics ready to trade Big Three for talented youth (chan 1390827)
  • The aging Boston Celtics tried to get younger last year when it sent Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Jeff Green (along with Nenad Krstic and a draft pick). But then he struggled while playing alongside Boston's Big Three of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. Then Green was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm that will keep him out for the season.

Now the team that won it all in 2008 is struggling and Celtics vice president of basketball operations Danny Ainge is now saying that he'd "consider a major move involving the Big Three if it would help foster the team's transition to the next era," according to the Boston Globe.

"[Red Auerbach] had a chance to trade Larry [Bird to Indiana] for Chuck Person and Herb Williams and [Steve] Stipanovich, and he had a chance to trade Kevin [McHale to Dallas] for Detlef Schrempf and Sam Perkins," Ainge said Wednesday, according to the Globe. "I was like are you kidding? I mean I feel that way now. If I were presented with those kind of deals for our aging veterans, it's a done deal to continue the success."

The Celtics are currently 5-8 and a half game back from the New York Knicks for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

  • 01/20/12--02:55: Mavs’ Vince Carter to miss another game (chan 1390827)
  • Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Vince Carter has missed two games with a sprained left foot, including Thursday's 94-91 victory over the Utah Jazz, and it isn't clear just yet when he will make his return.

What is clear, according to Mavs.com, is that the 34-year-old will miss the final game of the road trip on Saturday against the New Orleans Hornets. The 9-7 Mavs return home Monday against the Phoenix Suns.

In the 14 games Carter has played in, he's averaged 9.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. He was selected fifth overall pick in the 1998 draft out of North Carolina by the Golden State Warriors, but never played for the team. Since then, the eight-time All-Star has spent time with the Toronto Raptors (where he earned 1999's rookie of the year), New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic, Suns, and Mavs.

  • 01/20/12--03:03: Brook Lopez not joining Nets in Brooklyn? (chan 1390827)
  • The lowly New Jersey Nets are moving to Brooklyn next season and it isn't clear exactly who will be on the roster when they get there. While Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard has expressed interest in playing for the Nets, it is likely that he won't join the team unless point guard Deron Williams is still on the team. Williams, of course, becomes a free agent this summer.

Meanwhile, the Nets may also end up losing the skills of a center that is already on the roster. Brook Lopez, who hasn't played this season, due to a broken bone in his foot, can be a restricted free agent this summer and GM Billy King has said that he isn't going to try and get Lopez signed to an extension before the Jan. 25 deadline, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

And it isn't even clear if Lopez wants to be with the Nets. When asked on Thursday at his first practice back if he would like to remain with the organization, the Star-Ledger reports that he said, "I don't know. I'd like to be (with the Nets), but you know — a lot of uncertainties. I don't know."

Last season, the 23-year-old averaged 20.4 points, six rebounds, and 1.5 blocked shots per game. He is expected to "join the team on its next road trip, which begins Monday" against the Chicago Bulls, the paper reports.

  • 01/20/12--04:23: Utah Jazz looking to trade Devin Harris (chan 1390827)
  • Point guard Devin Harris joined the Utah Jazz last season after being traded from the New Jersey Nets. Now the Jazz is looking to unload him and has put him on the trading block, according to ESPN.

Harris only played 17 games for the season, averaging 15.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game. This year hasn't gone so well. With 14 games under his belt, the 28-year-old Harris is averaging 8.1 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. Over his eight seasons in the NBA, Harris has averaged 13.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, and five assists per game.

Harris was the fifth overall pick in the 2004 draft out of Wisconsin by the Washington Wizards. He was dealt to the Dallas Mavericks along with Jerry Stackhouse and Christian Laettner for Antawn Jamison.

  • 01/23/12--02:49: Ankle injury sidelining Celtics’ Ray Allen? (chan 1390827)
  • The Boston Celtics took down the Washington Wizards Sunday 100-94, but Ray Allen jammed his left ankle in the second quarter and is uncertain for Monday's game against the Orlando Magic, according to the Boston Globe.

Allen's injury came after he collided with the Wizards 6-11, 235=pound rookie forward Jan Vesely, and he had to helped off the court. "Right now there's pain in the back of the ankle,'' Allen said, according to the Globe. "If I had my druthers, I would have tried to come back out on the floor and try to work through it. It feels better, but we'll see by [Monday]. It was the way [Vesely] was setting screens. He was stepping out and extending and every time I tried to go around it, his foot was in the way, so it just seemed like a train wreck waiting to happen.''

The 36-year-0ld Allen, A 10-time All-Star, is averaging 14.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game this season.

  • Charlotte Bobcats point guard D.J. Augustin only lasted a few minutes into the team's game against the New Jersey Nets Sunday before he "aggravated a right big-toe injury," according to the Sacramento Bee. His disappearance helped the Nets find their way to a 97-87 win.

The Cats are now 3-14 while the Nets improved to 5-16.

"It's unclear when Augustin will be back," the paper notes,  but coach Paul Silas "expressed concern pre-game that Augustin had to sit down to ever get this foot problem healed." The toe has been bothering Augustin for "about 10 days," the paper notes, "and Silas could tell the ailment was detracting from Augustin's play Saturday in a loss" to the Chicago Bulls.

The 24-year-old Augustin, a native of New Orleans and the ninth overall pick of the 2008 draft out of Texas, is averaging 13.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game this season.

  • 01/23/12--04:44: Clippers keeping Chris Paul out versus Lakers? (chan 1390827)
  • Los Angeles Clippers points guard Chris Paul worked out Saturday and "feels great," Coach Vinny Del Negro told the Los Angeles Times, but the team isn't just throwing the 26-year-old four-time All-Star back into the lineup.

"There's a protocol that guys have to go through, in terms of injuries and things," Del Negro said, according to the Times. "We went through that [Saturday] in terms of his workout and conditioning. He felt good. It's just that I think we have to be smart about the process. Chris understood how hamstrings are and that was explained to him. We just felt that was the best way to go right now."

Paul, who joined the team in the offseason via trade, hasn't played since Jan. 14, missing five games for the Pacific Division-leading Clips.

It remains unclear if Paul will be back in the lineup when the team takes on the rival Los Angeles Lakers.

  • Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng may be out for "a while" due to a left wrist injury, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The paper notes that the loss of Deng is huge to the Bulls since he is the team's best defender and an excellent all-around player.

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau noted Monday that Deng is getting "multiple opinions" from various doctors to figure out his course of action and wasn't sure if Deng would need surgery: "Ah, I don't know. I don't think so, would be my guess,'' Thibodeau said, according to the Sun-Times. "There are people he wants to talk to. He's gone down this road with an injured wrist before. My guess would be it will be day-to-day."

  • 01/24/12--03:53: Hornets’ Gordon out another three weeks? (chan 1390827)
  • Eric Gordon only played two games for the New Orleans Hornets this season before being shut down on Jan. 6 due to a bruised right knee. Now the original three-week window the team gave him to recover is set to close on Friday, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. It isn't looking like he'll be ready at that point.

Gordon wasn't at the team's shootaround Monday or at its 104-102 loss to the San Antonio Spurs later that night because he was receiving further examination on his bruised right knee at a location the team did not disclose, the paper reports. The team wouldn't even say exactly what tests the 23-year-old shooting guard was undergoing, the paper notes.

Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears has it from Gordon that he was seeing a team-appointed doctor in New York Monday and that he was told that he shouldn't return to basketball activities for another three weeks.

Spears also reports that Gordon is "waiting to learn whether NBA commissioner David Stern will grant him a contract extension before Wednesday's deadline." Spears reports that Gordon's agent, Rob Pelinka, has had talks with the team recently about getting his client a new contract, but no official offer has been made.

Gordon told Spears that he'd like to re-sign with the team, but he can't do anything till Stern gives the go-ahead.

  • 01/24/12--05:01: Grizzlies expect No. 1 pick for O.J. Mayo (chan 1390827)
  • In the past year, Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo's name has appeared in more than a few rumors of possible trades. It appears that he'll have to deal with yet another one.

Sports Illustrated has it that the Grizzlies are "looking for a No. 1 pick" in exchange for the man who was the third overall pick in the 2008 draft out of USC.

Mayo now comes off the bench for the Grizz and has been delivering this year. He is averaging 24:30 minutes, 11.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. He's averaging 44 percent for his 3-pointers (much higher than his 38.1 percent overall average) and he scored a career-high six in a game last weekend. His rebounds-per-game is also up from 2.4 last season.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported Monday that Mayo probably won't be moved. "Griz management isn't seriously thinking of dealing Mayo nor is his possible, restricted free-agent status this summer a major concern," the paper noted. "Mayo likely will remain with the Griz this season because of his productivity and the Grizzlies' ability to control his future with the right of first refusal on contract offers."

Memphis came back from 20 points down Monday night to beat the Golden State Warriors for the team's seventh straight win.

  • Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love could be a restricted free agent at season's end, but the word from the St. Paul Pioneer Press is that he will instead sign a four-year extension with the team.

The 6-10, 23-year-old All-Star is "expected to sign a four-year, $62 million contract extension" on Wednesday while in Texas prepping for the evening's game against the Dallas Mavericks, the paper reports.

Love, the No. 5 overall pick in 2008, has averaged 15.8 points and 11.9 rebounds per game over the first four seasons of his career. This year, he's averaging 24.9 points and 13.9 rebounds per game for the 7-10 Timberwolves.

"It will help Kevin to have all this over with," coach Rick Adelman said, according to the Pioneer Press. "It has to be wearing on him. He's really been doing a good job of staying focused."

Teams have till Wednesday night to sign extensions with players from the 2008 draft. Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, fellow draftees to Love, have already signed extensions.

  • 01/25/12--03:18: Baron Davis debuting for Knicks Wednesday? (chan 1390827)
  • Veteran point guard Baron Davis has yet to play a minute for the New York Knicks this season due to herniated disks in his back, but Fox Sports reports that he may take to the floor on Wednesday against his former employer, the Cleveland Cavaliers.

On Tuesday, the New York Post had it that Davis was "doubtful" about returning Wednesday. "I'm taking it one day at a time, see what happens when I go out and work out and get shots up and see how I feel in the morning,'' Davis said, the Post reports. "I would love to play, but I don't think it's possibly going to happen.''

His first practice with the team on Monday went well, the paper notes, but Davis wasn't totally happy with his performance Tuesday: "I wasn't able to do what I needed to do,'' Davis said, according to the Post. "It's the competitor in me wants everything to happen now. I have a lot of kinks to work out.''

The Knicks decisively ended a six-game losing streak by taking down the Charlotte Bobcats 111-78, though Carmelo Anthony only scored one point in the contest.

Teams have till Wednesday night to sign extensions with players that came out of the 2008 draft. Any that go unsigned will become restricted free agents.

The word from Fox Sports is that the Phoenix Suns are ready to let Lopez fall into that latter group. Suns president of basketball operations Lon Babby said Tuesday night that the team isn't planning to offer Lopez an extension, the site notes.

"We reached out to [Lopez's agent] Arn Tellem and let him know that we were willing to engage in discussions to see if there was any common ground that might make sense," Babby said, Fox reports. "Their preference was to wait and see how things unfolded. We're perfectly fine with that. We just wanted to make sure we made the appropriate overture. Everything was completely amicable."

  • 01/25/12--06:00: NBA allows Hornets to offer Eric Gordon extension (chan 1390827)
  • The New Orleans Hornets finally got word from their owner, the NBA, that it could offer a four-year extension to guard Eric Gordon, Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears reports.

Gordon and his fellow 2008 draftees all have till Wednesday night to sign extensions or they will become restricted free agents this summer.

"In terms of my contract extension, [Hornets GM] Dell Demps indicated that it's out of his control and NBA commissioner David Stern has the last determination on the contract extension," Gordon told Spears the other day.

The 23-year-old Gordon spent his first three seasons in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers before being sent to Louisiana as part of the Chris Paul trade. He's only played in two games this season due to a bruised right knee and averaged 21 points per game. With the Clips last season, he averaged 22.3 points, five rebounds and two assists per game over 56 games.

Gordon expects to miss three more weeks of basketball, he told Spears. "The doctor said my knee will be 100 percent sound with rest," he said.

Bargnani called the injury "much worse" than his previous one, the Toronto Star reports, which is a bit nervous-making for Raptors fans. But coach Dwane Casey held out hope that it wasn't too bad, saying, "We'll see what the severity of it is — or if it's severe — evaluate it and go from there."

  • San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson is in Hawaii this week getting ready for his second Pro Bowl. He's been with the team since being selected in the second round of the 2005 draft out of Northern Colorado and would like to remain there for the long-term.

The word is that Chargers GM A.J. Smith is open to exploring that kind of deal, the site notes, and Jackson is happy to hear it. "There hasn't been any communication as far as contracts go," Jackson said, NFL.com reports. "If that's their feeling, that's great. I would like to stay in San Diego. Obviously, that's my home, that's where I was drafted. I've got some good guys around me — Philip Rivers, [Antonio] Gates, Ryan Mathews. It would be a great place for me to stay, so we'll see if that works out."

He also told the site that he'd like to avoid having the franchise tag put on him again: "I'd love to have a long-term deal, just to have security of where you're going to be for a while," he told NFL.com. "That's a decision that they have to make."

  • 01/26/12--04:54: Dwight Howard open to joining Celtics? (chan 1390827)
  • Much has been made of the teams that Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard has said that he would be open to joining when he becomes a free agent this summer: the Los Angeles Lakers, New Jersey Nets and the reigning NBA champion Dallas Mavericks.

It appears that the 26-year-old five-time All-Star and three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year is open to adding the Boston Celtics. After all, the Celtics will have a good deal of cash to throw around this summer when the contracts of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen come off the books.

"I'd always listen to a team like that," Howard told the Herald. "I want to win a championship, and it takes a certain type of team to win a championship. You know, there's a lot of teams who are great during the regular season. They play well, but it's different once you play in those playoffs, you know?"

Of course, Howard might just win a championship with Orlando this season. Then what would he do?

"It appeared Rajon Rondo was close to returning to the lineup a few days ago after spraining his right wrist Jan. 18, the Celtics point guard said (Thursday) he is not able to shoot or dribble with consistency and could miss several more days," the Globe reports.

Rondo put his wrist at 45 percent, but also noted that he "played with (his) elbow at 37 percent last year," according to the Globe.

In the 13 games that he has played in this season, the 25-year-old two-time All-Star has averaged 19 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 9.4 assists per game.
